Workhorse Watch Round 5
Workhorse Watch is back for 2023!
CEO’s don’t win premierships without a hard working forward pack. Each week we will highlight the players that are must have’s in your pack, whilst also help identify the players to be on the lookout for. There were 71 players who scored a WH in Round 3, with two players managing a DWH.
WORKING HARD
Harry Grant (Storm)
52 tackles, 14 runs for 128m in 80 minutes – DWH (0.83 stats per minute)
Leading the way in 2023 for MVP, completely justifying his status as NRLCEOs premium player.
Reece Robson (Cowboys)
56 tackles, 8 runs for 90m in 85 minutes – DWH (0.75 spm)
Hot on the heels of Grant, Robson scored his 2nd DWH of the season.
Josh King (Storm)
55 tackles, 13 runs for 130m in 67 minutes – WH (1.01 spm)
King has been solid so far this season, getting a WH in 4 out of 5 games. He started well last season as well but fell away towards the end of the season. Keep an eye on his numbers towards the 2nd half of the year.
Jake Trbojevic (Sea Eagles)
50 tackles, 12 runs for 102m in 90 minutes – WH (0.69 spm)
Is there a fitter forward in the NRL? Jurbo played all 90 minutes in the middle of the park, falling short of a DWH due to his lack of metres. Has the added bonus of dual Front Row/Lock this season which is handy for the byes.
HARDLY WORKING
Jeremy Marshall-King (Dolphins)
33 tackles, 5 runs for 69m in 80 minutes (0.48 spm)
First week back from a two game suspension and JMK was not at his best. Has not lived up to his 2022 form as yet but he should be getting a WH each week at a minimum.
Addin Fonua-Blake (Warriors)
23 tackles, 10 runs for 109m in 52 minutes (0.63 spm)
Has not scored a WH in his last three matches and has become a very unreliable CEO forward. I would not be happy if he was one of my two starting props.
Patrick Carrigan (Broncos)
14 tackles, 13 runs for 123m in 53 minutes (0.51 spm)
Even though his team was on the attack for most of the game, this is still a poor CEO performance from a guy who should have a much higher SPM. After starting the year with a DWH, he is now missed a WH in two of his last 3 games. Keep an eye on this moving forward as he may become a victim of the Broncos success and style of play. Could be worth looking at a trade.
SPUD POOL LOOKOUT
Connelly Lemuelu (Dolphins)
43 tackles, 9 runs for 74m in 80 minutes – WH (0.65 spm)
Has started the last few matches in the back row and has looked good. Would be a handy pick up if available in the spud pool. His job security looks decent as well given the Dolphins lack of depth.
Corey Waddell (Bulldogs)
35 tackles, 15 runs for 138m in 61 minutes (0.82 spm)
Given the Bulldogs injury woes in their forwards, Waddell is well worth a look. He gets a start in the back row this week and possibly for a few weeks to come.
Lindsay Smith (Panthers)
25 tackles, 14 runs for 125m in 35 minutes (1.11 spm)
Disappointed he didn’t get the start this week with the injury to JFH. This guy is the epitome of a workhorse and once he gets his chance he will be CEO quality.
WORTH MENTIONING….
Trent Loiero (Storm)
42 tackles, 14 runs for 144m in 80 minutes – WH (0.70 spm)
I think he is developing into a quality back rower. Has 4 WH’s and 2 ME’s so far and seems to be getting better each week. Worth looking at trading for him as he will still be under valued by most CEOs.
Mitch Dunn (Cowboys)
29 tackles, 5 runs for 54m in 39 minutes (0.87 spm)
His first week back from a long injury lay off and he seems to be well liked by coach Payten. Has been named to start at Prop this week which could open up a dual position for him given the injury to Jordan McLean.
Matthew Croker (Knights)
31 tackles, 10 runs for 78m in 46 minutes – WH (0.89 spm)
I am not sure why Croker hasn’t been given a chance to start at lock for the Knights. He is solid in defence but perhaps is lacking in ball playing ability. If he ever gets a start he will be worth picking up given his high SPM.
WORKHORSE PACK OF THE WEEK (most involvements by eligible position)
8. Jake Trbojevic (Sea Eagles) – 62
9. Harry Grant (Storm) – 66
10. Leo Thompson (Knights) – 58
11. Jacob Preston (Bulldogs) – 60
12. Nat Butcher (Roosters) – 60
13. Josh King (Storm) – 68
