Workhorse Watch Round 4

Workhorse Watch is back for 2023!

CEO’s don’t win premierships without a hard working forward pack. Each week we will highlight the players that are must have’s in your pack, whilst also help identify the players to be on the lookout for. There were a whopping 73 players who scored a WH in Round 3, with one player managing a DWH.

WORKING HARD

Keaon Koloamatangi (Rabbitohs)

42 tackles, 19 runs for 163m in 80 minutes – DWH (0.77 stats per minute)

Keaon has elevated his game to the point where he is currently the highest scoring back rower this season. For those CEO’s who drafted him early, well played!

Cameron Murray (Raabitohs)

61 tackles, 10 runs for 74m in 82 minutes – WH (0.90 spm)

Murray is a tackling machine. Played the full 80 last week and was huge in defence against Manly. One of the premium locks in CEO and will always get a WH if he doesn’t get knocked out first.

J’maine Hopgood (Eels)

55 tackles, 14 runs for 134m in 68 minutes – WH (1.01 spm)

After a quieter week in Round 3 he bounced back with another huge performance. This is a good sign as Ryan Matterson returned and Hopgood’s workload was maintained.

Ryan Matterson (Eels)

52 tackles, 14 runs for 133m in 83 minutes – WH (0.80 spm)

Did not muck around in his first game back after an extended holiday and CEO’s who held on to him will now start reaping the rewards. Played all 83 minutes in his first game back which shows he is super fit.

HARDLY WORKING

Jack Bird (Dragons)

24 tackles, 10 runs for 83m in 67 minutes (0.51 spm)

Started off the bench but played big minutes. I actually think sometimes Bird touches the ball too much for the Dragons as he is not as effective as I think he believes he is. In CEO terms though he should be getting a WH playing those minutes. Bird is another player who drifts in and out of games and doesn’t maintain his performance throughout.

Viliame Kikau (Bulldogs)

27 tackles, 6 runs for 66m in 80 minutes (0.41 spm)

A very lazy performance from a player who should be leading from the front. 6 runs is nowhere near enough for this attacking beast, which unfortunately is a result of the underperforming halves at the Dogs. Hold or Trade? – I would actually look to trade him out for this season if you can get a decent deal for a consistent WH back rower.

Corey Harawira-Naera (Raiders)

28 tackles, 4 runs for 23m in 73 minutes (0.44 spm)

A player who has really flatlined as a CEO performer. Only 1 WH so far in 2023 and I just don’t see his work rate increasing. The Raiders would be better off with Trey Mooney at lock.

SPUD POOL LOOKOUT

Zac Hosking (Panthers)

56 tackles, 12 runs for 94m in 83 minutes – WH (0.82 spm)

If you were like me and predicted that it wouldn’t take Ivan Cleary long to replace Luke Garner then you are smiling now. Huge performance from Hosking who gave us a glimpse of his potential at the Broncos last year. I am sure he is not sitting in any spud pools still but if he is get him NOW!

Griffin Neame (Cowboys)

28 tackles, 6 runs for 53m in 49 minutes (0.69 spm)

Despite the plethora of Front Rowers on the books at the Cowboys, Neame is a CEO player of the future. Back to back starts in the front row and while he didn’t set the world on fire, there was enough in his performance to suggest he is one for the future.

Makahesi Makatoa (Eels)

26 tackles, 8 runs for 71m in 34 minutes (1.00 spm)

It may only be for a couple of weeks while Paulo is out, but Makatoa plays the game hard and at some pace. He would only need to play 45-50 minutes to get a WH and he would also go close to a ME. even though he isn’t starting, I expect him to play more minutes over the next 2 weeks and he could be a good bye filler.

WORTH MENTIONING….

Jordan McLean (Cowboys)

31 tackles, 10 runs for 122m in 49 minutes – WH (0.84 spm)

Has gone under the radar so far this season but now has a WH in his last 3 games, which is 1 more than he got all of last season. Tough to judge if he can maintain this form but if he is available in your comp he is worth a look.

Elliott Whitehead (Raiders)

21 tackles, 14 runs for 111m in 45 minutes (0.78 spm)

A huge effort from a player who has become very inconsistent with his WH scoring. He is nearing the end of his career at 33 years of age, but worth monitoring his output for the next few weeks.

David Fifita (Titans)

18 tackles, 17 runs for 158m in 80 minutes (0.44 spm)

Started the year with 2 WH’s but has missed out in the last 2 games. I still don’t believe he is as fit as he can be, perhaps he still has lingering injury issues and leaves the tackling for others, or is just as lazy as he has always been. Still managed a ME last week and carried the ball 17 times.

9. Mitchell Kenny (Panthers) – 62
