NRL Physio Injury Updates: Round 18
Our resident rugby league injury expert, the NRL Physio has written a wrap-up of the injuries and recoveries after Round 18 of the NRL.
Jarrod Croker
Horrible news with the Raiders captain requiring surgery on his knee after suffering a dislocated patella. This will rule him out for the rest of the season with likely a 2-3 month recovery period. I wish him the best with surgery and rehabilitation.
Slightly clearer video on Jarrod Croker’s patella injury last night; can see left knee cap shift towards outside of leg as he goes down. Treatment decision (surgery/conservative?) will consider severity of soft tissue damage, can the knee cap remain stable moving forward? pic.twitter.com/DkSZoh30zB

James Maloney
The Blues five-eighth told the Big Sports Brekky that his toe injury has settled down but he will need to pass a fitness test at Captains Run on Thursday in order to play on Friday night. Stay tuned for more information.
Aiden Sezer
There was more bad injury news for the Raiders today as Sezer suffered a hamstring strain at training and will be out indefinitely. Scans in the coming days will help determine his recovery time. A general guide is:
- Grade 1: 2-4 weeks
- Grade 2: 4-6 weeks
- Grade 3: 8+ weeks
Nene Macdonald
The Dragons winger remains in a moon boot after suffering a mid-foot sprain. The severity of the injury is not yet known and a return date will be determined in the coming days as the injury settles.
Tevita Pangai and Mitch Aubusson
Tevita Pangai Junior and Mitch Aubusson were held out of their Round 18 games as a precaution due to hamstring tightness. Both are expected to be available this week, but worth keeping an eye on as the week progresses. Hamstring injuries can easily linger.
Api Koroisau
The Sea Eagles hooker is pictured here on Saturday night still using crutches five weeks post foot fracture surgery. He is still likely to be 3-4 weeks away at least from a return. Some foot bones have poor blood supply so recovery can be prolonged.
Jaydn Su’A
Su’A suffered a broken ankle yesterday and will visit a specialist this week to determine length of time on the sidelines. This is likely 4-8 weeks recovery if he avoids surgery or more than eight weeks if surgery is required. There is a real chance he could be out for the rest of the season.
Other injuries:
- Cameron King will be out until Round 24 for the Eels with a knee injury. There is no word on the specific nature or severity of the injury as yet.
- Sione Mata’utia has suffered a fractured eye socket and and will be sidelined for 2-3 weeks but won’t require surgery.
- Kurt Capewell suffered a broken thumb over the weekend. This is usually a 4-8 week recovery.
- Josh Reynolds will have surgery on his scapula and is out for the rest of the season.

- Chris Lawrence (hamstring/broken hand) will have surgery on his hand but is hopeful of returning before Round 25.
- Mahe Fonua is back at training and is aiming to return around Round 24-25.
