Captains Call: Round 24

Welcome to Week 24 of Captains Call

They’ve done it, they’ve won a close game.

Canberra has to be the hardest place to watch the NRL live, especially if you follow the Raiders.

Not only has it been a season of so close but so far, we also have to brave some of the worst conditions and what doesn’t help is a stadium that is so open you get to feel every bit of cold and wind and rain during the game. For some reason my wife (a Storm supporter) made the decision to go out and watch it (her fault I know) but I have to commend her and the kids and everyone else at that ground on Sunday arvo, whether you were there for the whole game or just part of it, it was rubbish conditions.

Let’s review the five from last week:

  1. Ryan James – 10 (including Metre Eater)
  2. Brown – 8
  3. Papalii – 4
  4. Eisenhuth – 4
  5. DCE – 1

In a game where Manly scored six tries, you’d expect DCE to get at least one try assist. Nope. Just one line break assist. Manly are in a world of hurt right now, something needs to change.

Papalii and Eisenhuth both got a wokhorse with Eisenhuth having enough involvements for a double but just couldn’t get the meters.

Brown managed his second double workhorse of the year with 64 involvements and 126 meters.

Best of the lot was Ryan James who racked up his fourth double workhorse of the year and a meter eater with 61 involvements and 174 meters.

Congratulations to all those who’ve already made their Grand Final and good luck to all those who need to win this week.

Let’s preview five for this week, a few left field options and a few who are coming good at the end of the season. Don’t forget to vote or leave a comment below.

Rhyse Martin

Martin would have to be close to Rookie of the Year. He has managed 10 workhorses in 12 games with a few tries in between. What’s even more impressive is he is a goal kicker and is kicking at over 90 percent. Early round pick-up next year.

Luciano Leilua

Little brother of BJ but just as strong. Has started to look like the player everyone knows he can be and has been rewarded with a starting spot for the last two weeks where he has excelled. A workhorse and a try in his each of his last two games is a great return for a player who will only get better.

Joe Stimson

With the injury to Hoffman and many others, Stimson is a walk-up starter for that second row spot. Since round 12, every game he has started he has scored a workhorse.

Isaah Yeo

Yeo has had his best year to date with 15 workhorses, seven better than his previous best year. He is one of only two Panthers forwards that generally plays 80 minutes a game.

Tepai Moeroa

Has been interrupted by injury but is finishing the year strong and that shows with his first ever double workhorse last start. He has 11 for the year and could have been a lot more.

.

Who will you captain in Round 24?
