Captains Call: Round 14

Welcome to week 14 of Captains Call.

Are the Bunnies genuine contenders? I’d have to say yes.

The way they destroyed the Sharks up the middle whilst missing Cook and Crichton, shows they are up there. The Burgess twins are showing the same form they were in when the Bunnies won it in 2014 and the forward pack as a whole has almost surpassed the Dragons forward pack who I have as the best pack in the comp, just. If there are any Bunnies backs left in you comp to pick up, then I’d jump on them right away.

Let’s review the five from last week and Cherry-Evans might as well have not even played. Against a team missing all but two of their starting forward pack, he couldn’t even manage to get a single point. To make matters worse he looked lost and disinterested and I guess that’s what you will get time to time when you sign a player on such a long contract. The other four, Tapau, Eisenhuth, Guerra and Ponga all managed to get to that four or five point mark with Tapau only missing a double workhorse by one six meter run.

Let’s preview five more and just take into consideration that not all players will back up from Origin so if you can avoid naming one as Captain then that would be the safest option.

Daniel Alvaro – safe bet

In a team that’s struggling both on and off the field, you can’t deny the effort Alvaro puts in every week. Picked up his first double workhorse last week with a huge 74 involvements. With Eels players dropping like flies, expect Alvaro’s minutes to remain high.

Paul Gallen – safe bet

Although he’s not the NRLCEO God he once was, Gallen still churns out those workhorses with ease. Expect Gallen to have a big game after his teams’ forwards were well beaten by the Bunnies. Possible double this week.

Cameron McInnes – safe bet

With all this talk about Cook, McInnes has been the forgotten man although his stats suggest he shouldn’t be. He is the third highest scoring hooker so far this year and is averaging seven points from the last six rounds. One of the from players of the competition.

Johnathon Thurston – risk and reward

Thurston’s Cowboys come up against a depleted Eels and after what the Cowboys did to Manly last week, I fear what they could do to the Eels. The Eels will struggle for numbers if all four that got injured last week can’t back up and with no Origin to worry about, he could really make his mark on this game.

David Fusitua – risk and reward

After a week off, the Warriors should be refreshed as they come up against a Manly team who put in a very ordinary performance last week. Fusitua hasn’t gone two weeks without scoring this year and against the Sea Eagle, I can see that trend continuing. For Manly’s sake, they’d be hoping the Trbojevic brothers back up.
