Captains Call: Round 13

Welcome to week 13 of Captains Call.

We now enter the State of Origin period and we all know it can be a very tough period for some of us, especially those who have a lot of Origin players. Sometimes its better to just accept a loss than trade out players just to fill holes for one week.

Again, I didn’t get to watch much footy this weekend, but I did see most of the Storm vs Cowboys game and as most of you I anticipated a good game, it was anything but. The Cowboys still look slow and the Storm can’t hold onto the ball. I fear the Cowboys are in for a few hard years ahead unless they can bring in some spark. Valentine Holmes anyone?

Let’s review the five from last week and its so frustrating when a player gets named only to be ruled out an hour before due to being ‘rested’, as was the case for Fifita. There were calls that he would get rested at some point but had no idea it was this week. Talking about disappointments, what about Frizell. He had his worst game of the year in terms of runs, only managing five for the game, he averages about 10 and if he hit his average he would’ve scored his workhorse. As I pointed out last week, there’s nothing worse than your Captain getting sin binned, luckily for Mitchell he scored a try and line break to offset that. Cook had another huge week with a double workhorse, try assist, line break and line break assist. This has almost become the norm with the only thing stopping him scoring 200+ is his selection for NSW. The best of the week goes to the best finisher in the game, Valentine Holmes. Three tries and two line breaks bring his total tries for the year to 11.

Let’s preview five more and don’t forget to vote or leave a comment below.

Martin Tapau – safe bet

Tapau has had an increase in minutes which means an increase in involvements. This will continue this week as Manly look to make up for last weeks close loss. Tapau to get an easy workhorse and those in a meter eater comp could see a double coming their way.

Aiden Guerra – safe bet

Guerra has missed only one workhorse this season and it was by one involvement. He is the type of player you can bank on during these times to get you an easy eight points.

Matt Eisenhuth – safe bet

Eisenhuth is one of the last remaining players to have workhorsed every week. Very much in the mould of Guerra, you can bank on an easy eight from him regardless of whether he start on the bench.

Kalyn Ponga – risk and reward

Coming up against the cellar dwellers, expect Ponga to show his class again. Last week was the first time this season he didn’t score a point, he’s too good a player to let that happen two weeks in a row.

Daly Cherry-Evans – risk and reward

After a heart-breaking loss last week and another Origin snub (I don’t think people are surprised anymore), DCE will be coming out all guns blazing. Against the most disappointing team of the season so far, DCE will have a slightly easier job knowing the Cowboys will be without three of their Origin stars. He will also have to step up in the absence of the Turbo brothers.
