Captains Call – Death of a Superhero

It was a rainy Sunday afternoon where all hell broke loose, one mistimed and poorly executed run sent the stadium silent. Poor Sam Burgess lay on his back writhing in pain as many CEOs hearts sank mine included. Not only was he the captain of two of my sides but as a diehard Souths fan I sat and watched possibly our season flash before my eyes.  Neck injuries are never pretty and what looked to be serious could only see Sam miss the good Friday game. Like any comic book character or the man this weekend is about, Sam will rise again. Like a true hero he managed to snag one point with a great line break and was well on his way to a double meter eater or workhorse, possibly both he is that good. Handing me my first two loses this year it was a doubly hard to stomach but being back to take on Manly is a huge relief.

Here’s Semi!

guess-whos-back-L-l9UB4O

Semi Radradra burst onto the scene this week having a hand in everything the Eels touched. Two tries, a line break, try assist and line break assist with a double meter eater saw him top this weeks CEO scores with 16. A poor start to the season with two zeroes saw many lose faith in the big man, even a CEO by the name of Syrian Lanister decided to bench the big unit costing himself a win opting for Anthony Don instead. His runs are averaging close to 11 meters per carry so a meter eater is never too far off for the guy when he decided to get involved. This week saw a huge improvement from the guy as he was coming off his wing a lot more to cart the ball up, this improved vigour and attitude bodes well for Semi as he continues to truck along.

Here at the top

Not far off Semi were Anthony Milford and Kevin Naiqama scoring 15 and 14 points respectively, this brings both players average so far to 10+. The Trbojevic brothers both managed to be at the top with Jake’s move to lock bringing a huge increase in minutes, however his run meters have suffered from last year as he isn’t carting the ball up as much. However with the prop player position this is a huge boost for him CEO wise as his increased minutes should secure a workhorse most if not every week and his ball handling skills are excellent for a forward which will sneak him some points here and there. Jack De Belin despite having the worst haircut in the NRL manages a double workhorse and meter eater this week – can’t stand the bloke on principle but he gets in there and does the work. Elliot Whitehead managed a workhorse at five-eighth this week and if he can continue that form while filling in and continue to have a hand in some tries he is a great candidate for captain at the moment. His team mate Iosia Soliola will also benefit from Whitehead’s move as he will gather more minutes starting the game, this week only two involvements and six meters short of a double.

Hooking the Hooker

Hookers continue to be weakly represented at the top of CEO, a string of injuries and decrease in running so far has led to this. The top hooker at present is Paul Carter who while producing hooker like tackling numbers of 67 did so from the backrow, thanks to his duel position he sits at the top on 22. Cameron Smith on 19 is in second and that’s with only two out of three workhorses and scrapping in the other two weeks.

Teddy keeps on rolling

Last week the question was asked ‘can Teddy be stopped?’ and while he was stopped from crossing the line this has hardly halted his points. Scoring eight this week without crossing is a great feat for a back. Setting up two tries and running for over 150 meters seems all is a days work for the young bloke. While James Tedesco may have been making a huge claim for the origin fullback role the switch from centre to fullback for Josh Dugan should see an end to this. Laurie Daley is unable to pick on form and plans to stick with players despite their on field performance, can only hope this pays off but for those with Tedesco this isn’t all bad especially if you’re also a Queenslander.

My Captains for Round 4

While James Graham may have seen less minutes last week (57) I’m hoping this is a new tatic of Des’ where he rotates resting Graham and Tolman as to not wear them out in the long run. If this continues I may have to switch from Graham to Jesse Bromwich every other week which isn’t a bad option at all. I’m hoping coming up against Souths, Graham will see increased minutes and runs than last week to take advantage of a Sam-less Bunnies outfit. Aaron Woods will continue in his place with my ‘Clarry Cup’ side leaving two spots vacated by Sam. In the Supporter’s League having a squad size of 14 my forwards choices are rather low and playing a much better Broncos outfit I’m going to be praying Alex Johnston can rack up a few tries. Ryan James will take the place of Sam in my Legends of League competition as he’s been outstanding of late even when coming off the bench.

    Hi,

I’m sure this is the wrong place to ask but don’t know where is.

A question on the scoring of bench players. What are the actual rules of rounding?

I had Zeb Taia on my bench this week and my opponent had James Roberts on his bench.

Both players scored 9 points(if starting).

James Roberts gets 6 while Taia gets 5.

This isn’t really a complaint about the 1 point(though it might if the result comes down to it 😉 ) but a matter of curiosity. I know there’s some strange rounding system but assume it would be consistent.

    Thanks

Hey Luke. It’s not so much a matter of rounding as it depends on how your competition has the bench setup. For example Taia got five (2 points for a try, 2 points for a workhorse and 1 point for a line break) and Roberts got six (2 points for a try, 1 point for a try assist and 3 points for 3 line breaks). The way it works is that scoring for each option is halved unless it is one. So a workhorse goes down from 4 to 2, a try assist goes down from 2 to 1, but a line break always remains one on the bench.

      Does that help?
